Today’s stop on the Atlas takes me to Philadelphia, a city with a fascinating place in American history and the perfect home for a gin with a rebellious spirit.
Philadelphia is often known as the birthplace of America, as it was here that the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and the US Constitution was written and signed.
It was also a key city during the Revolutionary War, a time when the blue-coated soldiers fought for independence and helped shape the future of the nation.
This connection is where Bluecoat American Dry Gin gets its name, paying homage to those Bluecoat soldiers and their determination to challenge the established order.
It’s a fitting story for a brand that has built its identity around doing things differently and creating a distinctly American style of gin.
Philadelphia Distilling was founded in 2005 and became the first craft distillery in Pennsylvania since Prohibition. Their mission was to create spirits with character and individuality, and Bluecoat was designed to move away from traditional London Dry expectations and develop its own American identity.
Distilled in small batches using a hand-hammered copper pot still, Bluecoat uses 100% certified organic botanicals to create a bright, citrus-forward gin with plenty of personality.
For today’s bottle, I’ve chosen their Barrel Finished Gin, which takes the original American Dry Gin and rests it in new American oak barrels for a minimum of 12 months. This ageing process softens the spirit and introduces layers of caramel, vanilla and toffee, creating a gin that is perfect for sipping, enjoying in a Martinez (which is today’s serve), or simply lengthened with a splash of ginger ale.
Even the bottle reflects the character of the brand — bold, distinctive and unapologetically American.
A city built on revolution, a gin inspired by independence and a barrel-aged spirit that proves gin doesn’t always have to be clear... another fascinating destination added to the Atlas.
