Before leaving Mexico, I'm making one final stop—not at a distillery this time, but in Coyoacán, one of Mexico City's oldest and most colourful neighbourhoods.


With its cobbled streets, leafy plazas and colonial architecture, it's easy to see why it has long been a haven for artists and writers. It was here, in the famous Casa Azul (Blue House), that Frida Kahlo was born, lived for much of her life and created many of the works that made her one of Mexico's most celebrated artists.



Frida is best known for her striking self-portraits, inspired by nature, Mexican folklore and indigenous culture. Although many people describe her work as surrealist, she rejected the label, insisting that she painted her own reality. Today, her paintings are often associated with magical realism—a style where everyday life is infused with symbolism, folklore and a touch of the extraordinary.



That feels rather fitting for this stop on my Atlas. While I'm travelling through Mexico in search of its spirits, it would seem wrong not to pause and celebrate one of the country's greatest cultural icons.


The bottle accompanying today's stop isn't Mexican but Italian.
