THE SASSENACH WILD SCOTTISH GIN, Scotland
Sam Heughan may be best known around the world as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, but his connection with Scotland goes rather deeper than simply putting on a kilt for the cameras. His Sassenach Spirits brand began with whisky, followed by The Sassenach Wild Scottish Gin in 2023, created around the landscape and wild ingredients of the part of Scotland where he grew up.
The name itself comes from Outlander. “Sassenach” is a Scottish Gaelic word traditionally meaning an outsider or stranger, although the television series gave it a rather more affectionate life as Jamie's nickname for Claire. It makes a rather good brand name, particularly when your entire proposition is about Scotland.
The gin is a fairly literal expression of that idea. Scottish juniper sits alongside rhubarb, heather, Scots pine resin, bramble leaf, blaeberry, crab apple and toasted oats. The apples and rhubarb have a particularly personal connection for Heughan, recalling the ingredients and landscapes of his childhood in Dumfries and Galloway.
The original gin was made in Newton Stewart at what was then Crafty Distillery, working with distiller Craig Rankin. That collaboration gave the gin something more convincing than simply being “Scottish” because the label said so: the botanicals and inspiration actually came from the region.
There is also something rather fitting about the choice of Newton Stewart. Galloway isn't necessarily the first place that springs to mind when people think of Scottish whisky or gin, yet the area has a landscape that lends itself beautifully to the Sassenach story: forests, hills, lochs, wild plants and a healthy supply of legends and old stones. It is the sort of place where a brand built around Scottish landscape and folklore feels considerably more believable than one simply borrowing a tartan pattern for the label.
Then the story took a rather interesting turn.
In 2025, Heughan and business partner Alex Norouzi acquired the distillery and renamed it Galloway Distillery. Suddenly the celebrity wasn't just standing beside the bottle. He owned the building where the spirits business had its Scottish home.
Galloway is clearly more than a convenient production address to Heughan. The distillery's own story talks about his childhood adventures around the region, ruined castles, standing stones, forests and the folklore of the Galloway landscape. His ambition is to use the distillery to celebrate the terroir and history of the area, while creating a permanent home for the Sassenach spirits.
There is another chapter still to come. Galloway Distillery is undergoing major development, with plans for a new production facility and an expanded visitor experience. So the bottle on the shelf is already part of a much bigger story — one that has moved from an actor creating a drinks brand to an actor investing in the place that makes it.
For a celebrity gin, that is quite a journey. Jamie Fraser may have been the character who made Sam Heughan famous, but this bottle is increasingly about the place he came from rather than the character he played.
